Should by any chance reading some of this blog got you dreaming about sailing, fishing or just  being on the water, I’d like to encourage you to follow your dream. previous home of sea lions before they moved to the Cow Bay ResortLet’s turn your vacation into a real adventure, sailing the Salish Sea, exploring the Gulf Islands, get close to nature.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream

For the longest time I dreamt about sailing, but was always under the assumption that this was a pastime for rich people only.

My dream never died and  to sail I only needed wind and isn’t that still free?calgan_23_photo

So I got myself a little sloop  (a 23’ Crown build in the late 1950’s in Vancouver, from which the “Puffin” is an original plug made out of cedar strips and was used as a mould).  Well, sailing may be inexpensive, but a boat  (Bring On Another Thousand) is like a hole on the ocean you periodically throw money in.

Maybe we can help one another. There are a few sailors willing to share their boat and time in exchange for some help with the up-keep and expenses.

We are not talking yacht club here & the luxury associated with those. We are talking about the adventure, excitement and thrill that comes with sailing.

No high priced tourist package, but a good time by donation. No regular tours, you make your own plans and we try to accommodate you.  Just let me know  what you have in mind, when would you like to sail , what would you like to sail… where would you like to go to and for how long … and…
“have you ever been to sea, Billy?”

Everything takes its own measure of time

Well, it has been a while since I put pen to paper, or should I say finger to type-writer. There are reasons that vary from sheer laziness to outright inconvenience, from lack of power (physically and/or 12 Volt for the laptop or connection to the Wi-Fi wireless) to lack of ambition, but never of a lack that I had something to communicate.

Some experiences may have to be vivid in your mind to give it that spark of the unique feeling that was present.  Of course I’m talking about the smorgasbord of emotions while sailing, especially of those feelings due to situations one has never encountered before.

I can still remember and almost visualize the dumb look on my face, when after all the exhilaration of a new main sail and it’s first trials (even though they were jimmy-rigged and had lots of room for improvement), the sheer joy of flying with new wings and winds still increasing, going 6 knots and expecting more… everything going perfect…I heard… with Reid Island on my port, shortly after a tack heading north towards Valdez,.. the SHNAPP… the realization… the boom had snapped into 2 pieces, the instant reaction…save the new sail…the instant change in flight of pure delight to a the erupt stop and the more calm inspection at the first (save and out of the wind) bay past Pourlier Pass on South Valdez, slowly testing a severely jimmy-rigged boom, entrusting the sail to it little by little as if it was made out of glass instead of sturdy #10 canvas.

Managed to sail on to Pirate Cove and even went through Dobb Narrows next day.  A few days later, after an around  Gabriolla Island sail, I got to fix my boom in Silva Bay. Talk about handicapped sailing …

Lots to tell, but little time to write, you should have been there…

It must have been the sunny weather that got me so active last week.  , it was quite a restless I spend only one night next to Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. quite noisy (even so I was in quiet waters). The convenience of having a bus stop for an Express going right downtown Victoria compensated a little for all the noise from loading the Sea-span ferry., but after a day in the city and a night next to the terminal I left first thing in the morning.

Sidney was my next stop since I was shopping for a new main sail. Here I was to meet Dan, who thought he might just have a fitting sail for the Puffin. As it turned out, Dan came through and his sail was a perfect fit…

So the two of us sailed despite a weather warning of strong winds with an outgoing tide, …

let’s work together

The human spirit will thrive with co-operation: far more than with competition. So why is our society based upon competition and not co-operation? The current economic system is based upon the masses competing with each-other for limited resources,( a lot of them man-made, created for the sake of profit) for one reason, to keep them enslaved to the system. …
It has often been observed that common crises create common bonds. While people seek advantage during the times of prosperity, shared suffering tends to draw people closer together. We have seen this behaviour repeated time and time again throughout the times of flood, famine, fire, or other natural disasters. Once the threat is resolved, however, scarcity patterns once again begin to steer people back to their behaviours of seeking individual advantage.
Canada  and large parts of the rest of the world seems to follow the U.S. blindly. Whether it’s under Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr, or Obama, the policies have remained the same and  it’s time to ditch those policies we have come to tolerate for decades before they consume what is left of our moral core.

If everyone was rich, then nobody would be,
because that’s a measure of how much better off
some are compared to the rest, …
and it’s part of the human condition
that some strive more to better their lot in life.
…but to what price?  Beware…some do achieve it,…and lose their soul?

Reminders to myself

If to be poor and content is to be rich, I still got a long road ahead of me.

This blog is to be a combination of writing a diary, communicating with friends, advertising the pleasure of sailing, sharing interesting information  and creating a platform to connect with like minded people. It works best with feedback. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking for attention, approval or praise, but would like  some honest critics or suggestions. In a world of mistrust, fear and alienation towards your fallow man I feel a growing need to re-establish out-dated values. Love, peace and happiness isn’t something out of a fairy tale, it is a concept that is definitely worthwhile to pursue. The most important in life shouldn’t be what we can get out of it, but what we can contribute. I’m afraid instead of setting a good example, my own faults and short comings are misleading at times. Yet, the desire to improve and to change, to become a better man is stronger the older I get and that too is one of the reasons I started this blog.
